Research in the Kulathu lab is focussed on discovering the fundamental principles of how cellular homeostasis is maintained by the ubiquitin system. In our research we use a multidisciplinary approach to gain mechanistic and functional insights into ubiquitin signalling mechanisms in health and disease.
Deubiquitinases control the ubiquitylation status of proteins in a cell and have important functions in modulating the functional outcome of ubiquitylation. For the majority of the DUBs, we have a poor understanding of how they are targeted to their substrates. The objective of this PhD project will be to discover and characterize SLiMs that function as substrate recognition motifs in DUBs.
